Virginia Bowen Has Been Called Home

Veteran Japan missionary Virginia Bowen went to be with the Lord on Wednesday afternoon, US West Coast time. Ginny went to Japan with the Conservative Baptist Foreign Mission Society during the Allied Occupation years and helped start the Ishinomaki Bible Baptist Church, did student evangelism and discipleship with KGK, co-founded the Japan Seisho O Yomu Kai (Neighborhood Bible Studies), as well as planting the Matsumigaoka Church in Tamagawa Gakuen, Machida City. She was also my adoptive "aunt" and earliest babysitter. Our loss is heaven's sweet gain.

Virginia suffered a stroke about 10 years ago, after which her health steadily declined. Last year she moved into the assisted living wing of her retirement community, and this summer into the skilled nursing wing. Speaking had become very difficult for her and her last words were about a week before she passed away. Thankfully her passing was peaceful and painless. To God be the glory!

In as much as Virginia's life spanned both Japan and the United States, and not many will likely be able to attend her memorial service in Oregon, this blog has been created as a place to share together memories about her life and testimonies of God's blessing through her. Feel free to make comments as God leads you. I will be posting more information as Lorraine Fleischman shares it with me, regarding memorial services and other items.

Thank you and may God bless you all richly.

  1. My most vivid memories of Aunt Ginney are in Karuizawa at their cabin during my early childhood summers. It's sad to hear of her passing but she is now in a much better place :)

  2. In the nearly forty years I’ve known Ginny, I’ve wished I could have her pleasant calmness. I’ve admired her quiet efficiency when younger and being able to focus deeply on tasks. She seldom complained. Her smiles increased and she appeared more relaxed about three years ago when my husband Dave took over her files and financial bookkeeping.
Most of all I have admired Ginny’s genuine humility. She never bragged.
Even six days before her death, when she was unable to speak, this humility was evident. I leaned over with my face close to hers and talked to her. Among the things I said was “Dave is always telling me how intelligent you have always been.” Ginny shook her head right and left to tell me “No, no.” I kidded her in contradiction by shaking my head up and down and saying, “Yes, yes.”

  3. posting for friends Geri Ann and Marvin, in McMinnville, OR:

It has been such a blessing through the years to know Ginny and Lorraine.
So glad that Ginny is completely healed and with her Savior that she so faithfully served all her life. May the Lord comfort her friends and family members as they will miss her so much. We will plan to be at the service to honor Ginny and give glory to the Lord she served.
    Blessings and peace
